What do I do about my dog eating the stuffing from his toys?
Go Stillers! asked:
I have a maltese that is 1 year old. He loves his stuffed animal toys. He has a rabbit and a duck that quacks. They are his fav. toys. The problem is that he gets too rough sometimes and rips a hole in them, then it takes me a day or two to notice and he has stuffing everywhere…mainly eating it. I keep sewing them up, but it makes me nervous that he might swallow too much of the stuffing someday and choke. But, he loves those toys and they are marketed for dogs. I mean, he’s a toy breed, so he’s not even as rough with them as a bigger dog would be. What should I do? He doesn’t even play much with other toys, except a rope and some balls. I would be taking away 80% of his toys if I do that.

If he’s eating the stuffing, you have no choice but to take away stuffed toys. He could become very ill from the stuffing and if the toys are the stuffed kind with a plastic squeaker inside, he could eat the squeaker and become very ill and obstructed. Stick to the nylabone type toys and the hard plastic that he can’t chew. He’ll be fine with only 20% of his toys and he’ll be better off health wise.
Mine have certain toys also, I keep replacements. When they can no longer be sewn I get out a new one and throw the old one away. Just hide it, once one of mind found it in the trash—poor guy was devastated
I have the same problem - my scottie loves stuffed toys but he destroys them in minutes.
Buy stuffed toys that are a little more durable and pay close attention when they’re playing with any toys.
My Pom is a toy destructor, too. Just keep an eye on him & pick up the stuffing. He has toys that 75% of the stuffing is gone from & he still loves them.
There are some choices you have. Interactive toys, kong, twist and treat, etc.
Don’t give your dog stuffed toys if he eats it. An obstructed bowel will cost a lot of money to fix and maybe even your dogs live.
No need to get rid of the toys, have them out when you play with him and supervise 100%.
Dog toys are marked for dogs that won’t eat the toys. There are warning labels. Not for consumtion, supervise at all times.
Just give only toys that seem safe enough, like they don’t seem easy to break/break open or choke on something if they rip it off of the toy. Or you could just notice when a toy looks like it’s ripped or will rip open/off and take the stuffing out of it and throw it out, also with the eyes or small parts of a toy if it looks like it’s coming off or about to just take it right off and throw it off. You never want you pet to be in danger.
One solution is to get a toy with no or very minimal stuffing. I like the Dr. Noys Pet Toys. Several of these plush toys have linings made of faux lambswool. They have a replaceable squeaker as well. The larger toys have the squeak enclosed in a lambswool pouch as well. The heads do have some stuffing. The back where the squeak is has a velcro area (pretty strong) so you can access the squeaker. These are not foolproof, so you will want to monitor your dog’s play. I’m including a link to what one of the toys looks like, but they come in frogs, ducks, rabbits, etc. and are more durable than many toys. I think they may be made by the Kong company. These toys also come in a variety of sizes so you can pick one suitable for a maltese. If the dog is an aggressive chewer, you may want to get a size larger than recommended.
My Scotties have enjoyed the Dr. Noys Pet Toys. Our new Scottie has earned the nickname “Ripper” since she is gutting toys like crazy. The Dr. Noys are survivors. Good luck.
