Is it safe to let a 10 month old sleep with a stuffed toy with beaded eyes?
Bee ~Brit Mum~ asked:
All his teddies have stitched eyes but today we were at my grandparents house and he took a shining to a stuffed snowman, so much so that he cuddled up to it (he’s never really cuddled a teddy before!) and fell asleep on it - very cute! Anyway they let him keep it, and he held it all the way home and didn’t let it out of his sight until bedtime. He cried his heart out when I took it off him before I put him to bed, but I didn’t want him to have it when I couldn’t see him because as I said it had beaded eyes. He eventually went to sleep but he was an unhappy chappy! I’ve inspected it, it isn’t an old toy it’s never been used and I’ve pulled at the beads with my fingers and teeth and they’re completely fixed in, no movement at all. My dad says it’ll be fine but I’m not sure, what do you think? It’s cute because it’s the first time he’s ever really taken to one thing, he’s never cared for any of his blankies or snuggly toys, and he seemed to really love this, and I’d love to let him sleep with it in future, but obviously not if it’s a risk. Pulling the beads out isn’t an option as they’re fixed in so firmly it’d mean cutting them out with scissors and it’d ruin it and the stuffing would come out. If you think it’s a no no, then my second question anyway is what kind of age do you think it’s okay to let children play with stuffed toys with beaded eyes etc? He does have a few others which were gifts at birth which I give to him while I’m there but don’t let him have on his own, but fortunately he’s never taken a specific liking to any of the others!
Thanks for the answers so far!
Could someone please report Ambur J’s answer? My reports never get anything deleted.
I clicked the link (stupidly) and the site gave this message:

When reporting I clicked ‘illegal’ and gave privacy invasion as the reason, as by the look of it it’s invasive virus software. Don’t click it!!
Oh it’s ok it’s gone lol!
Thanks for your advice - I’ll definitely take it, reading this has confirmed what I already think I knew, as you say Amanda it is not worth the risk of waking up to find the saddest scenario possible. Thank you
And Denise - it was just a question. There is no need to be such a b*tch. There always has to be one, huh!

trust your instinct. better safe than sorry. =D
i think its fine. my favorite teddy had beaded eyes and i’m now 16 and the eyes never fell off… i still have it.
my son is 6 months old and he refuses to sleep without his teddys. i know its not recommended but i know hes ok to sleep with things. watch him closely while hes playing with it, and watch him while he sleeps to see what he does with it.
i wouldn’t say that it is such a good idea because the baby could suffocate i would wait till the baby is about 1 and a half to.
No, its not fine, if and when your baby gets curious, and they do before ten months old, he will try to slowly but surely pick off things like those eyes. Did you read the warning, find him something that he cannot pick the eyes off of. Gees, they claim even three year olds pick off things and put them in their mouths, depending on teething, and hunger, or just because they are inquisitive. No No No, it’s not a good idea at all to let him play with that kind of toy yet.
I would say that if you can’t get any movement out of the beaded eyes, then your son isn’t going to have much of a chance. However, check again, better to be safe than sorry. I’m not a parent but I’ve worked in childcares and OSHC programs for 2 years now, and parents send stuffed toys from home and many do have beaded eyes, I don’t know if it truly is safe or is ignorant on the parents part. You’re the mum here, go with your gut instinct!
That so hard! I would definitely advise you not to let him sleep with it. The age it would appropriate would be when he no longer puts everything in his mouth. Probably 2 1/2 to 3 years old. Children younger than this tend to put things in their mouths for fun and accidentally choke on them. This is especially scary if you let him sleep with it because 1) SIDS guidelines recommend no stuffed toys or blankets until over 1 yr of age, and 2) If he pulls off the eyes in the middle of the night and swallows or chokes on them, you wouldn’t know!
So sad that he chose that one to get attached to!
It isn’t worth it. When your baby wants to chew on something or stick things in their mouth (which all babies do), the eyes will be a great thing to chew since the snowman is right there and the eyes stand out on the face. I would let him play with it and snuggle with it during the day when he is supervised, but at night it just becomes a hazard and you wouldn’t even know if he was choking until you woke up to the saddest scenario possible. I mean think about it, it happens. And when it does happen, it was never meant to happen and most likely could have been prevented.
I’ve tried removing those beaded eyes and I can’t even do it! So I feel very safe letting my son have one. He’s 8 months old and has one stuffy.
